Sheffield Lake was incorporated in 1920. The southern part split off as Sheffield Village in the 1930s.

There were 4,093 housing units at an average density of 1,650.4 per square mile (637.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.5% White, 1.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.9% from other races, and 2.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.9% of the population.
